This view I captured from the 10th floor of the NY Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital on the Upper East Side. For several weeks, while visiting with a family member, i would see this scene from a window in the hall on her floor. It was late on a December afternoon, when the sun was just setting behind the Manhattan skyline. Roosevelt Island and the Queensboro Bridge are to the left, the Empire State building to the right.

The story behind this painting:
This was the view from outside the Ed Sullivan Theatre at Broadway and W53rd St, NYC. It was in September, and we were in a line to see the Late Show with Stephen Colbert. We waited for a couple of hours in a light rain. I snapped a few photos; at the time it never occurred to me that I would want to paint this scene. But later, seeing the photos, the lushness and intensity of the colours got to me and I succumbed.
